Well, as of today, I'm no longer an 8-5 working slob. My last day at the regular job was friday. Today, at a time I would be at my desk at work, I am instead at my desk in my studio, looking at the trees outside while sipping coffee in nuthin but my boxer shorts (I'm sure you wanted that image).

Today is really strange... my first day free and on my own schedule, thanks to the influences of the creative world. A few things have me off balance today. Yesterday, one of my teachers, mentors, influences passed away. Joe Kubert was a monumental man... when I attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Arts (now known simply as the Kubert School), Joe was 63. He was a tank to all of us. Here was this man who taught and did administration at his own school every day, as well as staying on top of his own freelance commitments to a number of companies... and he also had time to play raquetball and be a member of his community and take care of his family. He never spoke down to us... he always made us feel that we were just as strong and important to the art community as he was. He made every task look so simple, and would graciously help us with something we couldn't get right... a fist, or a figure, or the stroytelling on a page. He always pointed out to me the things that also didn't work for him... it helped us to realize that as Olympian as this man was to us, he was still one of us: an artist who learns as he continues to work. Joe died at the age of 85, working and influencing still.

Today marks the birthday of Dan Fogelberg, my favorite musician. he died in December of 2007, not two months after Alice and I had our first dance together at our wedding to one of his songs. I had taken her to see him in concert, and his music meant so much to both of us, we were shattered when he died of prostate Cancer at the age of 56. His music is often playing while I draw, as he was a storyteller, and that type of personality weighs heavy and important to an artist.

Rather than be sad, I'm happy in the knowledge that I was able to shake the hands of both of these wonderful men, and rejoice in the fact that they held so much influence to me. I can only hope I bring that perseverance and integrity into my work as well!

Oh yeah -- I take it you understand that DragonCon is a very cosplay-heavy con, eh? Hope you're looking forward to that aspect, because you will see a LOT of it according to what I've heard from people who've gone there before! :)

I've been to Dragon since around it's inception, so yes, very familiar with it!

I'm not ashamed to admit I feel similarly when I write. I often "meditate" ahead of time to various storytelling musicians and musical artists. Among them are Johnny Cash, Gordon Lightfoot and Stompin' Tom Connors. Many others, of course. O, how I'd love to list them here! Most of them are Canadian.

As for the Pony stuff -- can't wait. I don't think I need to say that, but hey, there you go. :D I know of several comic shops and it's a shame I can't just walk in yet and ask, "Hey! You carry IDW stuff? Yeah? You know if you're getting that Pony comic coming out in a few months?"

I was walking down a sidewalk in a nearby city the other day and passed a (fairly well-stocked) comic shop I hadn't seen before. It was one of those moments when you just scrunch up your face, shake your head, and keep walkin' on. Ha.

Good luck to you, Andy.

You shouldn't tease me about gifts... I don't take it well. :XD:

I'll be as eager to see what you two have been up to with the comics as everyone else. Can't wait for issue 1!
