Rarity Micro Series Cover by andypriceart Rarity Micro Series Cover by andypriceart
The cover for IDW's MLP Micro Series issue 3. Katie and I did our only contribution (so far, anyway) to the offshoot of the regular book.
This cover was a lot of fun to do, although it was a compromise for me: I wanted to paint this on Black Velvet, but I ran way too short on time. But it works, as velvet was more a 70's thing, not 60's... and I wanted it to feel like one of the old Fillmore posters. The original is even black light reactive :)
Copic markers, PITT pens, india ink and white paint on bristol, 11x17.

This is absolutely my favorite thing in your whole gallery, the details (the fabric stretches, and the head band actually being distorted against her horn!), the colors, the obvious effort put into making sure this really felt like a poster straight out of the 60s, it's just an awesome piece of work.  :+fav:

This was probably one of my favorite stories in all of the series, along with Nightmare Rarity.  I especially loved some of the puns in the backgrounds of some of the panels, albeit dealing with both the 60s and 70s.  I think one of my favorites would have to be the poster for "Celestia Superstar", a send-up of "Jesus Christ Superstar", which came out in the 1970s.

What would have been even cooler is if you'd been able to have it print in ink that would be reactive to UV light (black light).  Would have really helped set the mood.

This is by far my favorite of all the MLP variant covers, I don't even know why. Rarity just looks really good in a 60s look!

I bought the micro-series comic with this cover last week. It was a fantastic read. The best micro-series comic so far. I'd say it is better than your first four main-series comics. I really enjoyed the story from the beginning to the end.
I hope Wheat Grass and Flax Seed appear someday in another issue because they are, like, the best side characters, like, from the whole comic, like.

I like the style of this cover better than the other regular one. It fits better the theme of the comic and it's better drawn. Though I would have drawn Rarity's tail a bit bigger but I think it has compositional and layout reasons to fit also the text besides her. It is not a big issue for me. Rarity's outfit is great but I think the pocket in her jeans looks a bit weird on a pony. How do they use them with their big and fingerless hooves? ;)

Hey, I just finished reading the MLP Micro-Series comic you made and I just wanted to say wow and thank you! I live in New Paltz New York, a particularly hippy-dippy town and the tale you told was like reading a page out of my biography. I went to school for Graphic Design and play in band and my Bassist lives on a hippy commune that, thanks to him, I've done work for and the parallels were just mind-blowing. Thank you so much for an absolutely amazing experience that I never would have thought to get from a comic book. You've officially made Rarity my favorite pony and inspired me to help around the farm even more.

Picked up my copy to bring to C2E2.

Rarity's one of those on-again/off-again characters for me, but a pretty good job was done.

BTW, was the 'goop' distinction related to several of the Peanuts comics during the 60's where Lucy sold the stuff? I remember Snoopy bought a bowl and got sick.

The comic itself though, the writing and your art really made this micro series issue stand out from the other two.

Picked up the issue yesterday. By FAR and WIDE the best of the Micro-Series. Honestly, it seems to me that Katie Cook, Heather Breckel and you are the "Dream Team" for MLP comics in general.
I did a post-reading analysis and realized you're really good at putting in density to otherwise plain panels of the story, among other things. I respect that.

Good job, all of you! :D

You would have been right to do it on Black velvet! It was a 60's thing! The first Hendrix painting I saw, was in 1968 on Black Velvet in black light colors. The medium(or canvas type) had tons of Elvis, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues............and on and on. Very west coast and Pacific rim. (California, Hawaii, Surf Bums)

I'm sitting here looking at the cover right now, and it's even better in person! :D I love what you did with the lettering; very 70's. Also the details on the shirt and jeans are also great. Those little spirals and shapes feel just right.

Speaking of details, I saw a couple that indicate you might just have a thing for Star Trek: that little sticker on the suitcase and the little patch on Derpy's mailbag. ;)

Also, I love Rainbow Dash's expression at the bar. "Hic!" :D

One more: I thought for a second that Flax Seed's cutie mark was pot leaves . . .
