MLP Day at the Beach by andypriceart
MLP Day at the Beach
It's FAR from being finished, but I wanted everyone to get a sneak peek at the new deluxe print that will be available at Bronycon later this summer! Once the final piece is ready, I'll post it.

This will also likely end up as a comic cover in the near future as well!

As most of my followers/fans know, I don't often do digital color, but how I approach inking on artwork dictates how color will be done. Traditional comic book inking is India ink with brush or pen, and effect/corrections with white paint. Markers or paint can reactivate the ink and smear it, or have adverse reaction to the white paint, so digital is the simplest approach in this case. Check out some of my copic marker pieces for how I approach inking there.

The Haunted Mansion issue 6, Doom of the Diva by andypriceart
The Haunted Mansion issue 6, Doom of the Diva
Back in 2006, Slave Labor Graphics Publishing had a short-lived comic of Disney's Haunted Mansion. Short stories in each issue told tales of different ghosts. Alice (then my fiance) and I decided we wanted to do a story as a wedding gift for ourselves, telling the story of the opera singer seen in the graveyard of the ride and how she came to be one of the 999 residents of Gracey Manor.

This is the final page from the story that we did- she wrote, I illustrated- that appeared in issue 6 of the comic. At that time, the "Emily" bride in the attic had recently been replaced with the deadly "Constance" bride, and the ax reflects that. There's even a reference to the Nightmare before Christmas "Haunted Mansion Holiday" makeover that occurs at Disneyland every winter.

The desire was to reflect the old horror comics of DC, Warren, and EC, where the tale is told by a narrator character. In this case, the narrator is the graveyard bust of Disney alum Thurl Ravenscroft.

Chrysalis FIENDship is magic page 5 by andypriceart
Chrysalis FIENDship is magic page 5
Those that know me know I despise those 3,5, and 7 page previews that everyone puts out before a comic... they often give away stuff That is just too big a spoiler before the book hits... in my opinion, anyway. So, I'm going to beat them to the punch!

Here's a raw page from the book- page 5, specifically. This is a pure scan before alterations are done to clean it and turn it into a bitmap for Heather to color... so, this is what the actual art looks like- India ink done over pencil, with sable brush, croquil pen, and Faber Castell PITT pens on 11x17 vellum surface Bristol board.

When Hasbro came forward saying they wanted the villains origins and backstories, I immediately said nobody else was doing Queen Chrysalis but myself and Katie Cook. After launching the entire comic franchise with her, she is near and dear to our hearts. I absolutely loved doing this book... I think fans will enjoy it... I also think they're going to have questions. We deliberately do not answer everything there is to know about her and her hive. There are far-down-the-road plans for her, and no sense in pouring everything out at once. We will see into her past tales, and discover little things, big things... and see her tell Twilight to her muzzle why she came to be the way she is. I'll say right now, as we've been asked constantly- it has nothing to do with any fan-theories out there. This was a very different approach.

Sharp eyes will note some differences to Chrysalis on this page... there are two distinct trademarks missing. Those will be explained. Older MLP fans may also recognize a true blast from the MLP past here... the Crystal-Eyed ponies from waaaay back in the franchise! So was Chrysalis the reason they're not around anymore? Hmmmm... So there is your tease before the book hits stands this month!

I'll be at c2e2 this weekend at McCormick Place Convention Center in the city of the big shoulders, Chicago! Fellow MLP Staff Katie Cook, Sara Richards, Amy Mebberson, and Tony Fleecs will all be there!

Remember what I say at every convention: CASH is your friend. Not all vendors take credit (I do for purchases over $10), almost nobody takes a check. Even when a vendor takes credit, there's no guarantee they will get a signal in these big metal buildings. So... remember what the Joker taught you: MONEY MONEY MONEY, who can you trust??

I'll be doing commissions at the show-
4x5 pencil headsketches are $10
9x12 pencil Full Figure are $60
9x12 rendered grayscale markers are $120

These are all for single figure, multiple characters are more. If you are interested in a 9x12 grayscale, get there early, I can only do a limited amount at each show.

Signatures are free, for up to 10 items. After that is $1 each.

Hope to see you there!

Hey! Was so cool of them to incorporate your own and Katie Cook's OCs in today's episode.

I'm happy they did. And in the same way, made them canon.

The MLP comics you and Katie Cook do together are just phenomenal! Volumes 3 and 5 are my favorites by far. Besides the great storytelling and art, each one is a treasure trove of pop culture references and background characters carried over from your previous works. The StarTrek references are especially amusing! Can you shed any light about the mysterious spy ponies that are always lurking about in the background?

I'm looking forward to your next volume!

Bless you, Mr Price. I just read your Chrysalis issue and I absolutely love it!

I'm not gonna complain about how it doesn't 100% fit my headcanon, because that's fruitless. It was never going to, and I accept that; I and other fans can easily adapt and work with changelingkind emerging from their own primordial soup (who knows how many millions emerged from there). Heh, I guess that means we expect the next changeling story to be titled, 'Changelings: Secret of the Ooze'. Heh heh... sorry.

Anyway, THIS right here is the Chrysalis I fell in love with back in "A Canterlot Wedding". This ain't no woobie, moping and doping Chryssie; this is the evil, maniacal conquering warlord Chrysalis who freaking OWNS the ponies in this issue.

This is why I loved the first arc and why I trust you and Katie with Chrysalis: you guys know full-well she's a monster and embrace it without question. You don't pull sob stories and excuses, and I love that! We get WAY too many "sob story woobie" villains nowadays.

Hats off to you guys!
