The Haunted Mansion issue 6, Doom of the Diva by andypriceart
The Haunted Mansion issue 6, Doom of the Diva
Back in 2006, Slave Labor Graphics Publishing had a short-lived comic of Disney's Haunted Mansion. Short stories in each issue told tales of different ghosts. Alice (then my fiance) and I decided we wanted to do a story as a wedding gift for ourselves, telling the story of the opera singer seen in the graveyard of the ride and how she came to be one of the 999 residents of Gracey Manor.

This is the final page from the story that we did- she wrote, I illustrated- that appeared in issue 6 of the comic. At that time, the "Emily" bride in the attic had recently been replaced with the deadly "Constance" bride, and the ax reflects that. There's even a reference to the Nightmare before Christmas "Haunted Mansion Holiday" makeover that occurs at Disneyland every winter.

The desire was to reflect the old horror comics of DC, Warren, and EC, where the tale is told by a narrator character. In this case, the narrator is the graveyard bust of Disney alum Thurl Ravenscroft.

Chrysalis FIENDship is magic page 5 by andypriceart
Chrysalis FIENDship is magic page 5
Those that know me know I despise those 3,5, and 7 page previews that everyone puts out before a comic... they often give away stuff That is just too big a spoiler before the book hits... in my opinion, anyway. So, I'm going to beat them to the punch!

Here's a raw page from the book- page 5, specifically. This is a pure scan before alterations are done to clean it and turn it into a bitmap for Heather to color... so, this is what the actual art looks like- India ink done over pencil, with sable brush, croquil pen, and Faber Castell PITT pens on 11x17 vellum surface Bristol board.

When Hasbro came forward saying they wanted the villains origins and backstories, I immediately said nobody else was doing Queen Chrysalis but myself and Katie Cook. After launching the entire comic franchise with her, she is near and dear to our hearts. I absolutely loved doing this book... I think fans will enjoy it... I also think they're going to have questions. We deliberately do not answer everything there is to know about her and her hive. There are far-down-the-road plans for her, and no sense in pouring everything out at once. We will see into her past tales, and discover little things, big things... and see her tell Twilight to her muzzle why she came to be the way she is. I'll say right now, as we've been asked constantly- it has nothing to do with any fan-theories out there. This was a very different approach.

Sharp eyes will note some differences to Chrysalis on this page... there are two distinct trademarks missing. Those will be explained. Older MLP fans may also recognize a true blast from the MLP past here... the Crystal-Eyed ponies from waaaay back in the franchise! So was Chrysalis the reason they're not around anymore? Hmmmm... So there is your tease before the book hits stands this month!

I'll be at c2e2 this weekend at McCormick Place Convention Center in the city of the big shoulders, Chicago! Fellow MLP Staff Katie Cook, Sara Richards, Amy Mebberson, and Tony Fleecs will all be there!

Remember what I say at every convention: CASH is your friend. Not all vendors take credit (I do for purchases over $10), almost nobody takes a check. Even when a vendor takes credit, there's no guarantee they will get a signal in these big metal buildings. So... remember what the Joker taught you: MONEY MONEY MONEY, who can you trust??

I'll be doing commissions at the show-
4x5 pencil headsketches are $10
9x12 pencil Full Figure are $60
9x12 rendered grayscale markers are $120

These are all for single figure, multiple characters are more. If you are interested in a 9x12 grayscale, get there early, I can only do a limited amount at each show.

Signatures are free, for up to 10 items. After that is $1 each.

Hope to see you there!

Bless you, Mr Price. I just read your Chrysalis issue and I absolutely love it!

I'm not gonna complain about how it doesn't 100% fit my headcanon, because that's fruitless. It was never going to, and I accept that; I and other fans can easily adapt and work with changelingkind emerging from their own primordial soup (who knows how many millions emerged from there). Heh, I guess that means we expect the next changeling story to be titled, 'Changelings: Secret of the Ooze'. Heh heh... sorry.

Anyway, THIS right here is the Chrysalis I fell in love with back in "A Canterlot Wedding". This ain't no woobie, moping and doping Chryssie; this is the evil, maniacal conquering warlord Chrysalis who freaking OWNS the ponies in this issue.

This is why I loved the first arc and why I trust you and Katie with Chrysalis: you guys know full-well she's a monster and embrace it without question. You don't pull sob stories and excuses, and I love that! We get WAY too many "sob story woobie" villains nowadays.

Hats off to you guys!

eh. tiwlight could have easily overpowered her so it wsa a bit iffy at the end.
though to be honest i think their decision really limits the scope for storytelling. basically, we know too much now for there to be much you CAN do with chrysalis outside of one final encounter, likely ending in her demise. there is really nothing more to chrysalis other than her being pretty much a lord of the rings orc. only evil, only destructive, a wretch of a creature that must be destroyed.
what i mean is that since we know her origins and that she is now just a monster, there is not much else you can do with her. they needed something a lot more vague. maybe the tree mysteriously growing from the pond or something, or that it wsa always there and starswhirl accidentally caused it to change.

also she is pretty much a non issue now, chrysalis. it is clear she is no match for celestia or luna. tiwlight is more powerufl. the crystal empire is likely toxic to her considering she is just pure evil; even sombra was hurt by the heart and he had good in him. if she reveals herself they literally have four different alicorns to send after her now.
even worse they could easily track her down with the castle tree.

........ also it gives the unfortunate circumstance of making her equivalent to a lord of the rings orc. false life destined only to destroy or be destroyed........

soooo basically there is no motivation for celestia to have spared chrysalis......... i know, kid show stuff. yet at the same time we see tirek do bad stuff, but we do not want to see him die.
sombra did bad stuff, and his death was an accident but we learn in the comics that the circumstances were complex enough to make us feel a little bad bout it.
discord did bad stuff, but he had the capacity to be a good guy.

chrysalis here is depicted as somehow more cruel to them, largely cause all of the sudden changeling feeding actually ruins a pony rather than weakens them (seriously, how come she went easy on shining?), and we know that she is not really a being. tirek is actually a species, sombra had good in him, and discord is a being who is neither inherently good or evil.
chrysalis is just an entity born to hurt other creatures.

in other word sshe is a creature that is to be destroyed. she is 'less' than even sombra because she is not really a being. she can only destroy. she might be funny but she is a being that one would reasonably want to see dead. meaning that it does not make sense that she would have been spared in her encounter with celestia to begin with, let alone that celestia would have left her alive.
it might be considered bad to kill creatures or even the bad guys. but chrysalis is a thing, not a person. no moral context against killing what is just a tool made to hurt others.

gonna have to say i three fourths like that new chrysalis comic.
got it off itunes.

however i have a rather large issue with twilight being....... not twilight. she was just plain stupid dude. not to mention sense she beat the tar out of chrysalis when she was a unicorn, i am pretty sure it would have been even easier to do so as an alicorn.

other than that, your origin story for chrysalis was immensely disappointing. maybe because of the various ideas the fandom created, but the idea you revealed was absolutely limiting. i enjoyed seeing all the trouble she cause in the past, and how she ended up so ravaged.
however the idea that her kind just sprouted out of some evil tree in some uncertain origin toxic bond is just utterly limiting as a concept. it removes the possilbity of there being rival groups of changelings for example, which would be an intersting conflict. it also utterly fails to explain how alternate chrysalis would ended up positive if chrysalis origin was simply evil.

also it was NOT unique at all to be honest. its basicaly aku's origin story. evil fragment falling from above. pool of evil force, demonic plant that grows and devours those around it.
heck even the part where the result is a shape shifting destructive monster too.

If you're going to complain, go to the writer of the comic. This is certainly a very inappropriate place to give this feedback which should be directed to the one who wrote the script.

On another note, you fans just can't learn to appreciate what they do for the comics, do you, just because you're now "being limited"? Seriously? "The more vague the better" isn't always necessarily true, and with people pressing for more information because they read too much into MLP, that simply is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. They can't end the series without explaining everything because they'll be called "plot holes"--if they give it a rather open ending they're still going to get some fury. But if they try to explain it they get raged upon and (for lack of better word) bashed for the very thing you said. But they have no fault, simply because they're the ones in charge and no matter how much the fans get enraged that their ideas are being stomped upon, no one knows better how to handle the actual thing than the actual staff. Not that I'm implying the fandom isn't a major role in the success of this series, but why can't we all just respect and trust them with where they're going with this?

Also, might want to spell check. I think there are two or three typographical errors you had there.

Though I have to ask even though I'm not sure if you'll reply, what the heck was King Aspen doing with the horns? Is that a peculiar kind of nature magic that only the royal lineage can obtain that unicorns (or Oryx) can't use?
